Boys 'R' Us! 08/09/2006 It’s been a while since there’s been an all-singing, all-dancing boy band troubling the charts, hasn’t it? But all that could be about to change with the arrival of America’s Us5, put together by the big man behind the Backstreet Boys, *NSYNC and O-Town, (Oh how we miss them) Lou Pearlman. Last night saw the group’s first UK showcase, filmed for their TV show ‘Big In America’. We even got interviewed for it (if saying "Yeah they were great!" qualifies as an 'interview'). The events as they transpired: » As far as we can make out, the band consists of: the ‘rebel’ (dreadlocked rocker Izzy Galegos), the ‘street’ one (bandana-wearing Michael Johnson), the young one (baby-faced Richie Stringini), the British one (Jay Khan) and the ‘hunk’ (chiselled blonde Chris Watrin). » Jay is quite possibly the poshest-sounding bloke ever to grace a boy band. » The stars of the show were undoubtedly Chris’s nipples, which managed to stay perky throughout the show despite the sweltering heat. We overheard two girls debating whether they were real or "fake nipples like the ones Samantha wore in 'Sex & The City’". » Despite Blue showing the world that it’s possible to be in a boy band without bounding about the stage like excited monkeys, Us5 have decided that dance routines circa 1999 are A Good Thing. We were a bit worried at one point when Izzy’s shoelace came undone, but no tripping occurred. Phew! » The boys were also rather keen on a capella harmonising at the drop of a hat, just to show any 'cynics' that they’re, like, really talented, and not just five dancing pretty boys. For the record they're, like, really talented. » Lead single ‘Maria’ is a Latin-tinged pop r'n'b track that manages to cleverly rhyme Maria with ‘senorita’. The highlight of the set however was second single ‘Just Because Of You’, an urgent, piano driven number that had a whiff of Backstreet about it. » They love Jesus. And who doesn’t? So, in conclusion: we probably liked the endearingly dated Us5 more than we would’ve done if we weren’t drunk. But then, we could say that about a lot of things…
